Our PeerForward Alumni continue to positively influence their peers long after their high school graduation. One such Alumni is Donte Black, the feature of today’s spotlight!
Donte currently attends Alabama State University, an HBCU with a rich history dating back to its initial founding in 1867. He is pursuing a bachelor’s in psychology and early childhood education and is set to graduate in the spring of 2028. Last summer, he served on the Alumni Support Team for our third Workshop of the season at Washington College. We caught up with him to learn more about life at his HBCU and what drives him to serve as a PeerForward Alumni:

Why do YOU serve as a PeerForward Alumni?
I serve as a PeerForward Alumni because PeerForward motivated me to go to college and pursue my dream of becoming a children’s therapist. I want to be that same source of motivation for others, encouraging them to chase their goals and believe in their potential.
What’s been the best part of attending your college/university?
The best part about attending Alabama State University has been the humbling experience of college life and the opportunity to meet new people. We all come from different places and backgrounds, yet we share a common goal—working toward a better future through education
How did PeerForward change your perspective of college?
PeerForward completely changed my perspective on college. At first, college wasn’t even an option for me, but that changed when I was blessed with the opportunity to be the captain of my school’s PeerForward team and attend my Workshop at Nazareth University. That experience showed me a different side of college and pushed me to step outside my comfort zone and pursue higher education.

How have you continued to be a positive influence on your peers?
I have been a positive influence on my peers by leading with confidence and encouraging others to take advantage of the opportunities available to them. Whether it’s offering advice, helping them navigate challenges, or simply being a supportive presence. That attitude is what got me inducted into the National Honor Society as well as the National Society of Leadership and Success.
What’s one piece of college advice you’d offer Peer Leaders?
Lead by example. It’s okay to be different. Don’t feel the need to fit in. Use the resources available to you, they are there to help. Practice good time management; balancing school, social life, and responsibilities will make a huge difference in your success.
