Peer Leaders in a team huddle.

This summer, PeerForward held three Workshops dedicated to training our Peer Leaders to bring positive change to their schools through three high-impact campaigns. While residing on a college campus, Peer Leaders prepare for their future postsecondary journey while discovering new ways they can guide their classmates through uncovering their own postsecondary path. Over the course of the 2023 Workshop season, PeerForward trained 294 students that came from Bermuda, California, District of Columbia, Florida, Hawai’i, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, and Texas. Along with them came 71 advisors, experienced educators who dedicated time during their summer vacations to attend because they recognized the value of the PeerForward program for their students.

Peer Leaders jumping for joy!

In order to pull off Workshops of this size, we could not do it alone. We were immensely grateful to have a team of 82 dedicated volunteers, 16 of which were Alumni of the program, to pour into our students and staff. Through their service, nearly 300 students received a personalized college list, tailored to their unique college “fit”, and a personal essay crafted with the insights of their peers and a professional. We also welcomed 29 Alumni Support Team members who acted as role models and energetic guides throughout the workshop. Our Alumni team was crucial to the workshops being a source of inspiration, fun, and knowledge for our next generation of Peer Leaders. For 22 members of this team, it was their first time returning to PeerForward as Alumni.

Our June Workshop was held at Cal State LA and served students located in the Western United States, including Hawai’i and Texas. Our two July Workshops were held at Nazareth University and were attended by our East coast schools and Bermuda students. Over the course of their Workshops, the students got to know each other. By the end of their week with us, they had forged close bonds with other Peer Leaders from all walks of life. Forming these connections and learning from one another is one of the many ways our Workshops enrich the lives and minds of our Peer Leaders.

Peer Leaders spelling out “PEER.”

At Workshops, our students received the leadership training needed to prepare them for their roles as Peer Leaders. They also explored ways to strengthen their own PeerForward teams. They assigned roles, delegated responsibilities, and discussed how they can best serve the needs of their peers when they return to school. Our Writing Coaches and College Coaches helped them with personal development as well. In small groups, the students met with their Coaches and created a list of best fit colleges and perfected their personal statements.

As we wrap up the 2023 Workshop season, we want to take a moment to thank everyone involved in making it a success. We hope to see you back again next year!
