We are proud to share that beloved Alumni of the PeerForward program, Fatima Koroma, has earned her Doctorate of Occupational Therapy from George Washington University! As a first-generation college student, Fatima worked hard to forge her own postsecondary path and find her purpose. We caught up with her to learn more about her journey and what led her to become Dr. Koroma:

What does it mean to you to earn this degree/certification?
After a life altering injury, I need both physical and occupational therapy. It was a scary and lonely period. Everyday is a journey, but by the grace of God, I am still here. I know that my purpose has always been to help others, this degree will allow me to aid in the healing journeys of people facing various health challenges. It will also allow me to advocate for inclusion and promote health and wellness in my community. I feel incredibly privileged to be able help people who may be affected by from any illness, disease, or disability.

How did your friends/peers influence, inspire, or motivate you to achieve your educational goals? How did you do the same for others?
I have been blessed to be surrounded by go getters. My sisters, my friends, My peers, my parents, the West African community in general have been the biggest motivators in my pursuit of education. Having people encourage my dreams and aspirations has been a constant throughout my undergraduate and graduate degrees. I hope that my story and journey encourages others to overcome self doubt, fear and anxiety and truly find their why.
Why do you choose to serve as a PeerForward Alumni?
I fell in love with the passion and purpose of the organization and the people in it. As a first generation student and a child of immigrants, the mission spoke to me. Providing students with the resources to gain access to higher education and/or career planning is vital to the success of our future leaders. During my workshop in 2016, I not only gained preparation for college, but I made life long connections that continue to pour into me today!
