Peer Leaders like Hillary De La Cruz inspire all students to be confident in their path to postsecondary success. This week, we celebrate Peer Leader Captain and Posse Scholar, Hillary, in our Forward Thinker spotlight
Meet Hillary. She’s a Science and Technology Student at Charles Herbert Flowers High School. She’s a proud Dominican American who was born and raised in Washington, D.C. A skilled leader, Hillary serves as Class President, Peer Leader Captain, and an all-around outstanding member of her community. She balances her responsibilities as a student-athlete, playing both Soccer & Lacrosse. Not only does she dominate on the field, but she dominates in the classroom as well, maintaining the principal’s honor roll all four years of high school. She is motivated by her friends, PeerForward team, and family to always persevere and strive for success.
At her 2022 PeerForward workshop at Nazareth College Hillary spoke about the impact discussing college plans with your peers has. “The conversations we have are beneficial because you get to see how your close friends and peers inform who you become and how you plan for your future. It goes to show how motivational you can be and how much of an impact you can have on somebody’s life,” she shared.
In a workshop interview, we asked Hillary “what’s one thing a college MUST have?”
She replied, “A law or an engineering program.” Through hard work and determination, she did it! This fall, she will be attending Bucknell University, College of Engineering as a Posse Scholar with a full scholarship.
Hillary, who will be majoring in Electrical Engineering, plans to become an Electrical Engineer in the future. Her advice for the next generation is,
“Even with determination & tenacity, you must strive to put your best foot forward, and fight to overcome your biggest obstacles.”
